Golden Hour Guide: Catching the February Light
Winter light makes for the best photos. Here are the top 3 spots to catch the golden hour in Amsterdam this month.
Photographers know a secret: winter light in Amsterdam is better than summer light. The sun stays lower in the sky, creating long, dramatic shadows and a soft, golden glow that lasts longer than the fleeting summer sunset.
In February, "Golden Hour" hits around 5:00 PM - 5:30 PM. Here are the three best spots to catch it.
1. The Reguliersgracht View
Stand on the corner of the Herengracht and Reguliersgracht. Looking down, you see seven arched bridges. When the low sun hits them, the arches reflect perfectly in the water directly. Itβs the classic postcard shot, but better in winter when the trees are bare and don't block the light.
2. The IJ Ferry
Take the free ferry from Central Station to NDSM. Being on the open water of the IJ river gives you an unobstructed view of the sunset. The contrast between the historic city skyline and the industrial north is striking in the golden light.
3. The Blue Bridge (Blauwbrug)
From this bridge over the Amstel, you can look down the river towards the Stopera and the Zwanenburgwal. The wide open space allows the light to flood in, turning the water into liquid gold.
